Deni Hill, the $100,000 winner of last season's "The Biggest Loser," will be in the Deseret News Read Today 5K Walk on Monday morning, July 25. The walk begins at 7 a.m. at Energy Solutions Arena, 301 West South Temple, and ends up at Liberty Park on 700 South. It's in conjunction with the annual Deseret News Marathon and 10K.
Today was the last day for advance registration, but there is late registration at EnergySolutions Arena on July 22 from 4-9 p.m. and July 23 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Late registration fee for the 5K is $25. The registration page says that kids can walk for $8, but that's the advance registration. I'm not sure if they can get in on the late registration. For more info on the marathon, the 10K or the 5K walk, check http://deseretnewsmarathon.com/.
And I will be walking in the 5K as well. During the years that I was a Deseret News employee, my family and I volunteered at the aid stations along the marathon route some years, handing out cups of water to the runners at 6 a.m. Other years, I did the 10K and 5K. True, the Deseret News laid me off last year, but I guess old habits die hard!
The 5K is fun, but it can be kind of awkward when you're walking down the parade route as all the folks are lining the street waiting for the parade to start. Some of them clap and cheer for you. Others are still sleeping off their party from the night before.
There are buses that take you back to Energy Solutions Arena, but you can also backtrack and find a spot to watch the parade.
